Jointly Published by The Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Ministry of Agriculture, Malaysia and Design Dimension Sdn Bhd

First Edition 1994, 124 pages.
ISBN: 983-872-006-2

-------------------------------------------------------------

The Langkawi islands are renowned for their clear turquoise waters blessed with an abundance of tropical marine life, sun-kissed beaches of fine white sand, mist-covered mountains with lush green forests, superior marble and a heritage of enchanting folktales and legends.

Beyond these, little is known of the mysterious caves nestling in gigantic limestone outcrops in hills and mangrove throughout the island that make up the jewel that Langkawi is. These caves are geological masterpieces of nature created over millions of years. The diversity and magnificence of their stalactites and stalagmites astound the senses.

Regardless of the preconception down the ages of caves being “dark, gloomy holes” shrouded in superstition and supernatural, the experience of being actually in one is beyond description. The world of caves is a world of prehistory, and a miracle of evolution.

There are numerous caves, excluding arches, notches and smaller sea-caves which, according to this book do not qualify as genuine caves. Of these, twenty-four caves have been identified, located and photographed. These include Gua Landak, Gua Kelawar, Gua Tanjung Dendang, Gua Cerita, Gua Bukit Putih, Gua Tok Jangkit, Gua Buaya, Gua Dangli, Gua Dukung Adik and Gua Pulau Lima.

The heaviest concentration of caves is on the northern region of the main island, and they are most interesting. Others are scattered over much smaller islands north, south and east of the main island. Hardly any cave has been located in the western region.

The caves represented in this book are by no means the total number of caves to be found in the islands of Langkawi. Many more, perhaps, lie lurking in the depths of limestone outcrops, forests and mangrove, awaiting discovery and exploration. Some will require professional skills and equipments to scale the treacherous limestone cliffs. Others will remain undiscovered for a long time to come, challenging those who dare to reveal their secrets and mystery.

This book boldly captures in excellent pictures and words the mystery and magnificence of caves and their stunning limestone formations.

Highly recommended reading for nature and caving enthusiasts,

for everyone
Category:Books
Genre: Reference
Author:By Farish A Noor, Eddin Khoo, David Lok
Spirit of Wood – the Art of Woodcarving in the Northeast Malay Peninsula.

The Spirit of Wood is perhaps the most comprehensive book on Malay woodcarvings from the Northeastern Peninsular states of Pattani, Kelantan and Terengganu that has ever been researched. Drawn from the collections of two of Malaysia's foremost master woodcarvers, the late Nik Rashidin Nik Hussein and his protégé, Norhaiza Noordin, this exhibition explored the origins, history and art of traditional Malay woodcarving by taking motif as the focal point. By examining how these motifs evolved over time, the book illustrated the dynamic interplay of native Austronesian motifs with Hindu-Buddhist, Islamic and Chinese influences.

The book also explored the traditions, techniques and philosophy of traditional woodcarving and placed them within the wider context of Malay civilisation. The artefacts featured in the book were carefully chosen to illustrate the materials used, the types of objects made, and the concepts, beliefs and cultural aesthetics that shaped Malay woodcraft.

Artefacts ranged from the everyday - cake moulds and tackle boxes - to architectural elements from mosques and palaces, to luxury and ceremonial items such as weapons, sireh sets and birdcages. In addition to antique artefacts, the book also showcased the works of the regions top craftsmen working today.

The Northeastern states of the Malay Peninsula represent a unique sub-grouping of the Malay World with its own cultural, artistic and historical heritage. Centred on the city of Pattani and rooted in the ancient Hindu-Buddhist kingdom of Langkasuka, the Northeastern Peninsula was periodically an important crossroads for trade passing across the Isthmus of Kra between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. During these periods of prominence, in particular between the 2nd and 8th centuries as well as the 12th through the 16th centuries, traders, scholars and religious pilgrims from across the region and around the world flocked to Lankasuka and to its successor, the Sultanate of Pattani. As a result the area reflects a characteristic blend of indigenous and foreign influences that is at once unmistakably Southeast Asian and uniquely Langkasukan.

A very good book to understand about wood, wood-carvings, patterns and motif... etc. The culture of the Northern Malay Peninsula.

Contents:
References and Works - Kelantan, Pattani, Terengganu
Interpreting Malay Woodcarving - mimesis, Malay woodcarving, design pattern
The Kingdom of Langkasuka - Langkasuka, Funan, Southeast Asia
Postscript and Acknowledgments - Malay, Daun, keris

A good reference book... with a 15 pages introductory text and 211 pages of illustrated text. Publication consisting of photocopy reprint of a 1920 manuscript acquired at the kraton of Surakarta (Central Java) presenting an in-depth description of names of kerisses and tombaks, 160 b/w line drawings of krisses, 49 b/w line drawings of tombaks. Suitable for the collector, dealer or whomever that is interested in keris and tombak shapes, does not cover all, but gives a rough idea...

This is the biggest size book, A3 size as compared to the rest of the keris books. The smallest being, 'The Invincible Krisses' .

An excellent book on the subject of the Javanese keris.
Lots of quality pictures showing the blade making process, early kerises, aesthetics of the blade, pamor types with quality b&w pictures, examples of iron and gold embellishments, and some related blades.

Keris dress is covered quite nicely too, with lots of b&w pictures. The process of making a keris hilts with nice examples of quality, well-made hilts. The selut and mendak is covered quite extensively with its various forms. The various sheath forms are covered with beautiful, quality b&w photos. The pendok is covered with some nice examples. Wood grains are discusses to a certain extend.

Keris, costume and culture is explored. Keris in the wayang world is discussed. Also an interesting topic would be the motifs found on keris blades and keris dress. The blade at rest, storing the blade is also covered touched.

Overall, a visual delight in black and white. A good look of the keris from a javanese world view.

The book provides an extensive overview of the history of the Malay Peninsula and South East Asia from the earliest of times up to the 16th century. It also includes an in-depth analysis of the international context of the political, economic, and social evolution of these kingdoms - providing essential background knowledge to the region's turbulent modern history.

This informative and accessible volume also features an impressive collection of reproductions of major stone inscriptions, as well as an extensive glossary of Sanskrit, old Malay, Javanese, and Tamil words, names, and phrases. A handy reference. 392 pages.

The book has a lot of nice pictures and maps of Bintan, Penyengat and Batam islands south of Singapore, lots of information about the people, the culture and the history of the islands. I found it a good aid in understanding the dynamics of the Malay-Bugis relationship and how this had ultimately affects the dispersal of keris in the area.

The most interesting part, (to me anyway), is the final chapter which talks about keris, with illustration of blades from the collection of Paul de Souza.
